WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court sided with a power company Wednesday in a dispute with Montana over who owns the riverbeds beneath 10 dams sitting on three Montana rivers, although the governor of Montana quickly declared that the state really got most of what it wanted. In a case that reached back to the travels of Lewis and Clark more than 200 years ago, the court voted unanimously to throw out a state court ruling that could have cost the company, PPL Montana, more than $50 million.

Recreationists are being asked to stay away from avalanche terrain in Northwest Montana as weather conditions have raised the danger level to high. The Flathead National Forest issued a special backcountry avalanche warning on Wednesday afternoon, calling conditions “very dangerous” in the Glacier Park and Flathead and Kootenai National Forest areas.


An attorney for the Kalispell man who admitted murdering his former girlfriend and her daughter on Christmas day in 2010 is questioning law enforcement’s response to the events leading up to the killings, asserting that better communication is needed between agencies. Noel Larrivee, a lawyer with the state public defender office, said that while Tyler Michael Miller is responsible for the deaths of Jaimi Hurlbert, 35, and Alyssa Burkett, 15, there were a number of “missed opportunities” for law enforcement to derail the shootings.

A Kalispell man was arrested on Tuesday afternoon and accused of marking a vehicle at the Kalispell Center Mall with a “graffiti sticker” and resisting arrest. Gus Hill, 22, was spotted by a Kalispell police officer at about 4:30 p.m. placing a graffiti sticker on a car. When the officer attempted to confront Hill, he ran off and a foot chase ensued. During the short pursuit, a private citizen tackled Hill to the ground, holding him down until the officer arrived.
